Elena Sanchez Blanco
MArch, ARB, RIAS, Certified Passive House Designer
Elena is an architect and Certified Passive House Designer based on the Isle of Mull, where she started ESB Architects in 2018. Originally from Spain, she earned her Master’s in Architecture from the University of Seville before gaining diverse international experience working in Moscow, Tel Aviv, and Madrid. Her early career saw her involved in a wide range of projects — from luxury retail interiors and restaurants to playground furniture, passive houses, and even a 250-hectare military training base.
Since moving to the Hebrides in 2013, Elena’s passion has shifted towards rural architecture that respects and responds to the unique environment and communities of the islands. She spent several years working with Thorne Wyness Architects and Roots Architecture, gaining a deep understanding of local building traditions and establishing strong connections with clients, contractors, planners, and surveyors. These relationships and experiences inspired her to set up her own practice to serve the needs of the island’s people more directly.
In Scotland, Elena trained at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow to become a Certified Passive House Designer, adding specialist knowledge in sustainable design and energy conservation to her architectural skill set. She approaches every project with a focus on low environmental impact and energy efficiency, combined with a quiet, thoughtful design philosophy that embraces material honesty and a deep connection to place.
Elena strongly believes that the best architecture emerges from collaboration. She works closely with clients, contractors, quantity surveyors, and other specialists to ensure that projects are not only beautifully designed but also practical, cost-effective, and well coordinated. Her aim is to create bright, healthy, and comfortable spaces that meet the evolving needs of modern rural life while respecting the traditions and landscape of the Hebrides and west of Scotland.
